Gus Lynott: Say What You See

A project instigated, devise d and developed by Ian Wieczorek in association with Ballina Arts Centre, and co-curators Catherine Marshall and Patrick T Murphy, Say What You See brought to the fore the relatively unknown artistic oeuvre of local Ballina artist Gus Lynott, and also offers an exploration of creativity within the context of mental health. The project culminated in a major exhibition of Lynott's work in his home town at Ballina Civic Offices, comprising 70 works in painting, print and sculpture; a 52-page catalogue; and a short film interview with the artist by videographer Louise Wallace and film editor Aleksandra Rydzkowska. The project was supported by Mayo County Council, Creative Ireland Mayo, and Mental Health Ireland.
The exhibition ran from 22 July to 26 August 2023.

Gus Lynott: Say What You See is the first major solo exhibition by Ballina artist Gus Lynott. Over the past 35 years, Lynott has created an impressive and substantial continuum of work, primarily through painting and printmaking. However, over that time he has rarely exhibited, aside from in group shows in Mayo and its surrounds. Gus lives with bipolar disorder, and his daily artistic practice is a reflection of the positive relationship that can exist between creativity and mental health. This exhibition, comprising some seventy curated works in a variety of media, represents just a small part of Gus’s substantial oeuvre. However, it showcases the breadth of his creative practice and the richness and imagination of his artistic vision.
